The lazy, hazy days of summer are here! Take heart, there are oceans of swimwear choices--and it won’t take a lot of cash to make a big splash. Here are the beach style stories for the Summer of 2009:
Dive in
Don’t be daunted, there is a suit for every body. Try on multiple suits until you find the perfect match.
Here are some tips to get you started:
Remember:
■Triangle tops are great for a smaller bust
■ Ruffles or ruching also help the ladies with smaller chests
■ Halters with a wider band work better for a larger bust
■ Underwire acts as a bra and is good for those who need support
■ Tankinis give that two-piece appeal yet provide coverage for those who can’t
showcase a washboard tummy
■ One-piece suits with ruching in the middle are a good option for curvy gals
■ Tie side bottoms offer a variety of adjustments for different body types
Bohemian
Inspired by the ‘60s and ‘70s, but with a decidedly modern feel, Boho chic is still sizzling hot. Paisley from ABS Swim is a lovely, blue paisley print halter bikini with sweet hot pink ruffle flourishes. Be cool: Add the matching maxi dress and a pair of toe ring flip flops. Swimwear designer Shoshanna Gruss collaborates with pal and fellow designer Charlotte Ronson to create the totally hip(py) Made with Love swim line. No need to add any jewelry, the duo tricked out their Boho Floral bikini with wood beaded straps on the bandeau-like top and side ties on a full brief. Toss the sunscreen in a straw bag and off you go.
Color
You’ve got a rainbow of options from which to choose! Bright and vivid colors in both bikinis or monokinis are in now. Red, pink, violet, yellow, green or blue, it’s all about the hues that look good on you. Rebecca Virtue’s BECCA line offers a red hot number, Bungalow, a Grecian-inspired, shirred two-piece suit. Throw on a head scarf, gold cuffs and her Island Bungalow peasant printed tunic and Riviera, here you come! Feeling blue? ABS Swim’s Serpentine Solid in turquoise blue with bandeau top and sash hipster bottom has a fun snake fixture. Their graphic Sunset Safari print cover-up completes the ensemble.
Cut it out
What’s en vogue? Cutout treatments with risque perforations and criss-cross straps! The line between one- and two-pieces has blurred, thanks to these sexy suits. The monokini was strutted down many designer runways, from Herve Leger (by Max Azria) to Miss Sixty, Rosa Cha to Versace. Juicy Couture Beach offers a yellow- and navy-striped pique maillot with side cut outs and ties. Don’t forget to accessorize- a floppy hat and oversized sunglasses provide sun protection and make a statement! Another option- a black one-shoulder maillot from the first ever NK for Wal-Mart swim collection by fashion icon Norma Kamali. A flirty skirt and espadrilles are the perfect compliments.
Eco Pretty
Ready to make an earth-friendly statement? Rebecca Virtue’s BECCA collection has introduced a natural swimwear fabric made from soy! This revolutionary fabric has a ‘cottony’ look and feel. Her R & R line consists of bikinis (with just a touch of embroidery) and maillots. Pair a bikini with some colorful wooden jewelry and her comfy, striped Cabana cover-up (made of bamboo) and make Mother Nature proud!
Graphic
Geometric prints can visually balance out your proportions! Another limited edition suit from the Made with Love swim collection is the Ikat print bikini with triangle top and brief. Top it off with the line’s matching lace edged tunic, add a pair of embellishment flats--and you’re resort-ready. Tidepool by BECCA transports you to a favorite seaside destination. The subtle swirly print in a palette of sea green, chocolate brown and peach has a gem-like stone buckle. This suit pairs nicely with wooden bangles and compliments the coordinating maxi tube dress made of bamboo fabric. Looking for a sassy one-piece option? Juicy Couture’s Jackie Mixed Media maillot with deep V-neck and side cutouts in navy-and-yellow print looks Cote D’Azur chic decked out with sailor shorts and cap.
Floral
For more than 60 years, the bikini has been making waves--and itty-bitty still appeals to the in-shape crowd. This season’s flowery patterns are tiny too! Made with Love’s Ditsy Floral string bikini has a soft pastel print offset by hard-edged studs. A solid sarong allows you to cover up. Watercolor Floral from ABS Swim is sweet and sexy. This mini-floral halter bikini embellished with ruffles comes with a matching off-the-shoulder, ruffled floral dress.
Frills & Fringe
For a flirty point of view, why not consider a touch of fluff? Just as in ready-to-wear, where ruffles, fringe and lace are prominent, this season’s swimwear is all about the flourish. A strong standout for its not-so-basic-black approach is Juicy Couture’s black pleated ruffle skirt bikini, sure to put a little shimmy in your step. Cha cha cha!
Polka Dot
Polka dots are always in! Norma Kamali puts her signature swimwear touch on this summer time favorite with classic mix-and-match pieces in black and white. Choose from a variety of silhouettes, from bandeau tankinis to keyhole tops, from string bikinis to skirted bottoms. Her new line, NK, is a Walmart exclusive.
