Roll out the red carpet!
Award season has begun and it’s time for Hollywood’s hottest to show off their designer Do’s! This month’s Designer Closet features looks inspired by our favorite outfits from award shows past. We’re talking about the gowns that made our collective jaws drop-the best of the glitter, glitz, elegance and grace!
Going for Gold
Red carpet Hall of Famer Jennifer Lopez knows how to make a style statement! At the 2009 Golden Globes, she selected a plunging neckline in a gleaming gold, halter gown from the design duo Marchesa. At the same event, breakout star Megan Fox also transformed herself into a Hollywood leading lady. She too chose to go for the gold in an embossed spaghetti strap gown from Ralph Lauren. As for accessorizing, both actresses piled on the bracelets, chose dangling earrings and a coordinating clutch, and showed off their sex appeal!
Liquid Metal
Metallics have always shone on the red carpet. From silver to bronze, gilded gowns never go out of fashion. Just ask style icon Cate Blanchett, who always lands on best dressed lists. At the 79th Academy Awards in 2007, the best supporting actress nominee stole the show in her dramatic charcoal gray Armani Prive gown. Sleek and sexy, she looked like she was wearing liquid metal!
Best (Dressed) Actress
Kate Winslet had quite a 2009! Winslet won Best Actress accolades at both Golden Globes and the Academy Awards, not to mention Best Supporting Actress at the Screen Actor’s Guild! Unofficially, she also vied for the best dressed title. The triumphant star chose Yves Saint Laurent for her two biggest moments. At the 66th Annual Golden Globes, she went with a strapless, slate grey satin number with a black belt. To take home her Oscar, Kate Winslet pulled off a flawless nod to Old Hollywood in a one-shoulder, gunmetal grey gown with a lace embroidered sleeve, plus a retro coif.
Fairy Tale Princess
At the 81st Academy Awards, Sex and the City’s Sarah Jessica Parker didn’t need statement jewelry to accessorize her stunning, light green Christian Dior Haute Couture gown. Her decolletage was all the adornment she needed. The dress was the stuff of fantasies. Screen goddess Charlize Theron certainly looked like a princess at the 2005 Oscars. Her eye-catching, strapless, baby blue gown was also a Christian Dior Haute Couture creation!
Scarlet Ladies
From candy apple to deep russets, shades of red often pop on the crimson carpet. Eva Longoria’s vivid red, strapless Reem Acra gown looked primetime pretty at the 2009 Golden Globes. A sleek chignon, statement earrings, bangle bracelets and a Swarovski clutch completed her look. At the 2006 Oscars, Keira Knightley was breathtakingly beautiful in a burgundy taffeta, asymmetrical Vera Wang gown, paired with a vintage multi-colored Bulgari necklace and smoky eyes. Knightley later donated the sensational dress to a British relief organization; the auction raised funds to help fight poverty. Gorgeous and generous-now, that’s style!
Striking & Strapless
At the 2009 Academy Awards, Anne Hathaway looked the part of Hollywood ingenue in an intricate, champagne-colored Armani Prive beaded dress covered in pailettes and Swarovski crystals. She showed off her peaches-and-cream complexion with a sweet updo and over a million dollars worth of Cartier diamonds (including an onyx and black crystal dragon brooch affixed to the back of her gown.)
